Fromeco Batteries Author: Kelvin Buck, Gailvin Air Models
In regards to Fromeco batteries, they are Lithium Ion batteries. Unlike
Li-Po batteries which are in a pouch form the Li-Ion batteries are in
it's own canister(just like Nicad) form which make them safer.
Li-Ion do not make good electric aircraft batteries, for that Li-Po is
the best, but for glow and gas flying you can't beat Li-Ion for
endurance. We have one member that has a Chip Hyde Cap with a DA 50 and
he is on his 17th flight of about 8-9 minutes each and he still has
power left. He figures he could make 20 flights easily. I personally
have these batteries on my 1/4 scale Extra. I have put 7 flights on it
before mechanical error brought it down (the aileron servo screw came
out and off came the control arm).
Li-Ion electronics do cost a little more to get started because you need
a charger that is compatible with Li-Ion or Li-Po but once these items
are bought the extra flight time and endurance are well worth the price.
The Li-Ion batteries are a 2 cell battery with an output of 7.4 volts
(fully charged actually puts out around 7.6). A regulator is used to
lower the voltage from 6v to 4.8v or any amount in between, it's easily
adjustable.
