2010 Indoor flying Micro Plane and Heli Mall Show Author: Bill Cousins
I have done a lot of mall shows, but never a mall show of only Indoor micro planes and heli's. As indoor flying is just about over I wasn't sure how much attraction it would produce. Well, I was mistaken as the turn out in the mall was very good and attracted lots of interest. We were lucky enough to have a empty store in the mall, so our set up was just inside and were able to fly Micro Vapors and Micro heli's to show the public how they flew. Then at the end of the day we just closed the folding doors and locked it. Much of the public didn't even know about micro planes and heli's. I fly indoors in a gym through the winter months, and this was a good way to spark the interest. As I said before, it was basically the wrong time of year to put it on but that said, there is alot that can be flown inside the house and also outside in calm or slight winds. Anything we can do to spark the interest and get more people flying planes and heli's is a bonus. If 1 out of 100 people that had been at the mall show start flying, that is a good start. We might have to put another one on in late October, just before the indoor flying season starts again, and try to get more people interested in indoor flying.
For someone that has never flown before, indoor flying with a slow plane {say a Vapor} to start is ideal and also gives the person "stick time" before venturing outdoors in a club with an instructor to learn to fly the bigger planes. A mall show is a very good way to interact with the public. Much of it is a questions and answers. I just about lost may voice the first day from talking too much.
Everyone from the very young to the more mature person can enjoy flying with the micro flyers. There are a couple of members in our club alone that are over eighty and they both enjoy the hobby immensely.
